Zero to Five

Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga offers a full range of services to help whānau grow healthy, happy tamariki. A child’s first years offer parents and caregivers the best opportunity to lay a solid foundation for physical and emotional well-being.

Our medical centre, Hauora Heretaunga, and dental service, Oranga Nīho, offer free doctor consultations and dental care for enrolled children under 18 years old. Enrolment is easy, simply phone 873 7244 or call in at 821 Orchard Road, Hastings.

Tamariki Ora team of community nurses go out into the community to provide well-child checks. They are able to administer child immunisations, and discuss any issues or concerns about the health and development of your 0-5 year old.

We have a passionate dental education team who are tasked with the early identification and registration of tamariki in pre school dental enrolment. A particularly successful promotion has been the implementation of the Brush In programme, the positive effects noticed by our dental therapists:

"Clinically, the benefits of the Brush In Programme are really evident.  The little ones at the Kohanga Reo, especially, had little decay and very clean teeth."

Te Taiwhenua o Heretanga have the responsibility for providing information, promotion & support around injury prevention for whānau who live, work or play in the Heretaunga rohe. As well as promoting key messages around safety we also operate an affordable Child Car Seat Service. Contact our main offices for more information phone 873 0971.

Another program we run that has a significant health benefit to tamariki is Aukati Kai Paipa a free stop smoking program specifically targeted to Māori wahine and their whānau. Reducing exposure to second-hand smoke gives immediate benefits to the health of foetus, babies and children. Phone 873 0971 for more information on how to quit smoking.

Our  ECE centre, Te Tirahou,  offers a kaupapa Māori based early childhood care and education for 6 months - 5 year olds and follows the Ministry of Education Te Whāriki curriculum. There are two areas designated for tamariki.  Teina provides a nurturing educational environment especially suited to the specific needs and abilities of tamariki aged from 6 months to 2.5 years. Mataamua caters for enquiry based learning for tamariki aged from about 2.5 to 5 years of age by providing a stimulating and challenging environment that encourages curiosity, reciprocal relationships and a sense of well-being. Our ECE teachers are trained and passionate in their work with the children:

"I love to hear the tamariki singing as they play and I also love seeing the expressions of joy and wonder on their faces when they discover something new."

For more information please visit Te Tirahou, 821 Orchard Road or phone 873 7542.
