Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga has launched in partnership with the HBDHB and EIT Hawkes Bay the new Maori Nurse Graduate Programme. This programme was developed by the Clinical Nurse Manager in partnership with the HBDHB and is the first of its kind in the country.
Te Whata Pukenga was launched in August 2011 with a powhiri for
two new Maori Graduate Nurses. The naming of Te Whata Pukenga was
developed by Fred Reti and Te Kaihautu, Marei Apatu and literally
means - 'a house of prominent professionals'. This new programme
draws upon our greatest untapped resource - our young people and
moves them into a career development pathway of Nursing.
Maori health status requires great improvements across all
indicators and, as the health workforce is an aging workforce, this
programme provides a great opportunity for young Maori to become
health professionals and work for their own people.
We are delighted that we have a career development proogramme
like Te Whata Pukenga, which flows on from the many educational
scholarships we provide to our community.
