Early Childhood Education Centre

Te Tirahou provides early childhood education within a kaupapa Māori framework. The principles are based on the early childhood curriculumn document Te Whāriki, to support whānau development based around tamariki.

Te Tirahou provides affordable, quality early childhood education for 6 months - 5 year olds.

There are two designated areas for tamariki.  Teina provides a nurturing educational environment specifically suited to the needs and abilities of tamariki aged from 6 month to 2.5 years.  Mātāmua caters for enquiry based learning for tamariki aged from 2.5 years to 5 years of age by providing a stimulating and challenging environment that encourages curiosity, reciprocal relationships and a sense of well-being through empowerment of all tamariki by trained Kaiako.

How we work:

Kai - Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea are provided Monday - Thursday, with parents providing kai for lunchbox day on Friday.

Subsidies - We offer 20 hours ECE for 3 and 4 year olds and have access to a number of other Work and Income NZ subsidies.

Community - Involvement with our community takes place via library visits, excursions related to tamariki interests and other local community events that fit with our philosophy/ vision for Te Tirahou.  We also hold whānau hui.

Whānau Involvement - We have an open door policy that welcomes our whānau to spend time at the Centre when they are able to.

Hours - Part time and full time options are available within our operating hours, Monday - Friday, 8.00am - 5.30pm.

The principles of Te Whāriki are:

Whakamana - Empowerment through respecting tamariki rights as people and individuals

Kotahitangi - Holistic development through the delivery and integration of holistic learning and practices

Whānau tangata - Family and Community involvement through governance and management of Te Tirahou

Ngā Hononga - Developing relationships through whakapapa, whanaungatanga and through fostering interactive, reciprocal relationships

Positive responses regarding Te Tirahou:

"The staff here are so professional and their calm and harmonious attitudes to both tamariki and colleagues makes for a very welcoming and pleasant learning environment" (Visiting lecturer from ECE training institution).

"Our tamariki enjoy fun activities the Kaiako organise. These activities help tamariki learn and develop" (Parent, Te Tirahou).
