Culture

Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga is one of six Taiwhenua in the traditional takiwa/ region of Ngāti Kahungunu. As Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga we are a distinctive Māori organisation in a predominantly mainstream arena focused on uplifting whānau whanui and environmental wellbeing.

A culture we value

Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga undertakes and maintains cultural practices in terms of our traditional waka Tākitimu, our eponymous ancestor 'Kahungunu' and Heretaungatanga, encapsulating our unique collective heritage through;

Our strategic vision

Te Haaro te Kaahu Ki Tuawhakarere
"the view of the native hawk (see beyond the Horizon) - our future"

Our mission statement

Mauri ora ki te mana Māori o Heretaunga
"realising whānau potential"

Our strategically located base of operations, Heretaunga Park design work and imagery was created to visualise and interpret the ideas of our kaumātua.

Along with te reo Māori and Ngāti Kahungunu kawa, tikanga is an essential element of the organisation - its governance, management, workplace culture and the work that Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga does in supporting and empowering the whānau of Heretaunga.

Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga conducts powhiri (traditional Māori welcome) to acknowledge the value of manaaki, an extension of hospitality for new kaimahi (staff) and manuhiri (visitors).

The values of whakawhanaungatanga (meaningful working relationships) are supported through daily himene, karakia and the opportunity to share positive affirmations amongst kaimahi.

Professional development is conducted for the 180 predominately Māori staff, under the guidance of the Pou Tikanga with the resource Te Toi Huarewa, a book specifically written for Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga.
