Marei Apatu holds the role of Te Kaihautū here at Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga.  Marei was involved in building the foundation blocks for Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga and entered into his senior management role in 1991.

As Te Kaihautu, Marei is responsible for the management of the Māori Community Development Unit, Te Manaaki Taiao, working with marae / hapū and regional / local bodies in the areas of natural resource management, environmental and community development.

In 1996 Marei attained a Master of Māori Management Degree from Te Wānanga o Raukawa.  This tohu enabled him to function confidently in a very hands-on way engaging ngā whānau / hapū / marae in environmental issues and facilitating wānanga around whakapapa.  Marei has played a pivotal part in the formations and mandating of He Toa Takitini for the settlement of the Heretaunga-Tamatea Tiriti o Waitangi Claims and holds a current commissioners 'Making Good Decisions' certificate for 'The Resource Management Act'.

Marei is married to Karen and has six children, 23 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
